Hey guys,
So I returned from 5 days in Camden, NJ early Monday morning, and let me just say that Masters Nationals is kind of a spectacle. There were a LOT of old people in spandex representing a lot of teams. Our trailer was parked right next to CRI's (and the portapotties...awesome), and their masters team is kind of like their juniors--there are a lot of them and they are annoying. I met more than one person who knew Amelia...West Side, from Buffalo, was near us, and this guy from Riverside who came to use our ergs also knew Amelia. Sadly no one had any really interesting stories. I also asked someone from Minneapolis if they knew Meredith or Victoria but they didn't. :(
So our club is not very big, we only had about 25 people come, but they did fairly well--one silver and a pile of bronzes. I ended up coxing for the old ladies (average age 55-60)...I think because they've done so many races that they don't really need a coxswain to motivate them so all I have to do is not hit the buoys (easier said than done!) and it doesn't matter what I say to them, which is good because that stuff is hard. We got a bronze in one event and it was kind of bittersweet because we came back from a REALLY bad start...but I think that if we had had not even a good start but one that was just not so abysmal we probably could have gotten gold. Oh well. It's also kind of cute how tired they get after a 1k
I also got to go to Wegmans like every day so that was really awesome. In fact when they came looking for people to cox them at Nationals I was like it's in Camden....that's near Wegman's...I can go to Wegman's every day...ok, I'll go.
Some of the races are really funny though...like the F-J straight 4-s. An F boat has an average age of 60, so that should give you an idea of the hilarities of some events. The 75+ 1xes are also kind of funny, but sort of inspiring too because damn, I hope I can still row when I'm that old.
Did I mention that New Jersey kind of sucks (sorry Man-Yan!)? Everything looks the same and you can never take a left turn. I think I'd still be going the wrong way on Rt 38 if it wasn't for GPSes.
The ride home was also pretty awesome, our last race went off at 4 PM so we managed to get everything fully loaded by like 5.15 PM...everyone had to go to work on Monday so we were all driving really fast and kept passing other rowers' cars on the highway. In my car we decided that it would be an awesome idea to play this book on tape about the zombie apocolypse whilst driving through Pennsylvania woods in the dark. I also decided that it would be a good idea to drink about 7 Red Bulls and cram my face with Pringles and chocolate. So yeah, every time we had to stop for gas I was afraid of the zombie lurking under the car.
I'm back in Boston on Friday evening...is anyone planning on running or something on Saturday? After 10+ hours in the car I want to stretch my legs! Also my old roommate just e-mailed me that Fight Club is showing for free at LSC on Friday night...I might go depending on when I get back.
Can't wait to see everyone!! Just a few more days!
