Hey guys! A couple quick updates from Colorado:

Firstly, and most workout-relatedly, I have discovered that I LOVE BIKING! One of my brothers just bought a really nice new bike and I have been riding it everywhere. Luckily, he doesn't mind because that means he gets the car. I also started going to this spin class at my gym (doing an hour of steady state is much easier when you have someone at the front of the room talking to you the entire time) so I get to do even more biking. It's gotten to the point where I'm considering training for a triathlon. I've always wanted to do one and I feel like the run and swim are short enough that they wouldn't be too difficult, but I had thought the bike part would be too difficult for me. (Anyone who has done a triathlon, have any tips/suggestions for training workouts?)

My gym also has this thing where you can test your level of fitness and see how you compare to the average person your age. I went and got tested, and I did alright in all of the categories except flexibility. Turns out I have the flexibility of the average 70-year old. Denise would be so proud...

Probably the most interesting workout I've gotten in since the summer started came when we had this freak hailstorm at my house. It rained/hailed for almost five hours straight (this is a really big deal in Colorado, apparently. My town was on the news and people were talking about the hail damage for the next week). Anyways, one of our basement window wells started to fill up with water. At one point there was probably a foot and a half of water in the window well, leaking into our basement. So, my dad, my 11-yr old brother, and I, who were the only ones home at the time, spent four hours bailing water from the window well into plastic bins, carrying them up the basement stairs and dumping them off our front porch. I put up a picture of my littlest brother and our very well-engineered collection mechanism (aka duct tape and trash bags). I guess it was a pretty good workout because of how many times I climbed up the stairs?

I hope everyone is having a great summer!! I can't wait to see everyone again in the fall!

  1. Ahh, definitely to a triathlon Janelle! I don't have any specific workout advice except to get some swimming and running in beforehand :P and it might be helpful to swim in an open body of water if that's what the triathlon will be in, cause it's a lot different from swimming in a lane at a pool! Be prepared to be kicked.

  2. Yeah, swimming in open water is scary. I used to pull people out of the water and some of them had even done ironman competitions and just couldn't handle the murky water that day. Sprint triathlons are awesome... but longer ones are good too.

  3. Stairs are like stadiums!! And doing them with water weight is kind of like adding a weight vest.... hardcore.
